Horizon’s Edge

Horizon’s Edge privacy policy

Horizon’s Edge is a map app for crews in the woods. It is made by Nathan Tyler. It has no ads, does not track you across other apps or websites, and nothing it collects is sold or shared for marketing.

You sign in with a code from the office that gave you the app. What the app sends goes to that office’s own server. For JW Bamford crews that is JW Bamford’s server, run by Nathan Tyler.

What the app collects

  • Your location. While the app is open it shows where you are on the map. While a track is recording it keeps recording with the phone locked or in your pocket; that is the only time it uses your location in the background.
  • Your position for your crew. When Share my position with my crew is on (it starts on, for safety, and Settings turns it off), the app sends your latest position about every 30 seconds while a map is open or a track is recording. Others who have the same map see your first name and that position for 15 minutes. Only the newest position is kept; there is no history of where you were.
  • What you draw. Points, lines, areas and tracks, with their names and notes, are sent to the office server so your office and your other phones have them.
  • Photos you add. A photo you take or pick for a point is sent with that point. The app never reads your photo library on its own.
  • A phone id. The app makes an id for this phone so your sign-in only works on it.
  • How the app is running. Screen timings (which screen, how long it took to open) and crash reports (the error and where in the app it happened). These carry no maps, drawings, photos or locations; they are kept with your account so the office can tell which phone had trouble.
  • Your name and sign-in. The office gives you a name and a code; the app keeps your sign-in on the phone.

Where it is kept

On your phone, in the app’s own encrypted store, and on the office server. Map pictures come through the office server, so the picture provider never sees your phone.

Who sees it

You. The people who run Horizon’s Edge at your office see your drawings, tracks and photos. Crew on the same map see your first name and current position while sharing is on. No one else.

Deleting it

Deleting the app removes everything it holds on the phone. Sign out in Settings locks it on the phone. To have what is on the office server deleted, ask your office or email [email protected]; it is deleted within 30 days.

Children

Horizon’s Edge is for work crews. It is not made for children and does not knowingly collect anything from them.
